Eating in Tokyo
For the most populated area in the word, eating in Tokyo offers no excuse for not being able to find amazing food! We’ve narrowed down some options for you.
With so many options for eating in Tokyo, it can be hard to find the perfect bowl of these soft, chewy noodles soaked in flavorful broth. Or, maybe the perfect bowl is around every corner. You should probably try a few of them just to be sure. Remember, ramen is meant to be eaten quickly and many restaurants will be packed at lunch time. Ramen is also popular in Hong Kong.
If you already love sushi, you will think you’ve died and gone to heaven. If you think you don’t like sushi, you will quickly be converted. You can buy sushi made with fresh fish right from the fish marketing in Tokyo. Be sure to try a variety of kinds (watch the price!) at different restaurants. Eating sushi is as much about the food as it is about the whole experience, including the presentation, the service and the skill used to create these glistening, bite-sized pieces of magnificence.
Tea is the most commonly drunk beverage in Japan, and is consumed at any time of the day. However, taking afternoon tea is a lovely tradition in Tokyo and one you will not want to miss. Many restaurants try to out do each other with elaborate spreads of sweet treats and a leisurely atmosphere to enjoy sipping your tea. Many types of tea are available but green tea is the most common. If you do not specified what type of tea you prefer upon ordering you will be served green tea.
We can’t report about eating in Tokyo without mentioning Japan’s signature drink, Sake. In case you are new to sake, it is a Japanese rice wine made by fermenting rice that has been polished to remove the bran and then it is put through a brewing process (similar to processing beer–but not similar in taste at all) where the starch is converted into sugars before being converted to alcohol.
Much like the plentiful ramen shops, you can find Sake all over Tokyo and it is a delight to partake in a sake “tasting” where you can try several varieties and really get to know this popular drink.

Yakiniku is the Japanese version of grilling your own meal and is commonplace on the streets. This is definitely a MUST TRY while eating in Tokyo. Order some short ribs and kimchi and cook your own food right at a small table top grill. The meat will be fatty and juicy and will melt in your mouth (depending on how good of a cook you are!)
Tokyo has several fish markets scattered throughout the city, but the most popular one is Tsukiji Market (築地市場, Tsukiji Shijō). It is one of the world’s largest fish markets, handling over 2k tons of seafood products per day. It is scheduled to move to a new site in Toyosu in November 2016.
The sensory overload created by sellers, buyers, bicycles, scooters, delivery trucks and the products themselves has easily turned Tsukiji Market into a tourist destination for the experience alone. Even if you don’t plan on buying any fresh fish to cook yourself while you are traveling, it is a site to behold.
