Travelers have so many choices these days when booking lodging. Airbnb, hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, even couch surfing.

We all like to save money while traveling, but with so many options the time it takes to find a great deal may not be worth it in the end. Or is it?

Here is a quick guide to places around the world where it may be cheaper to book through Airbnb than traditional hotels. The prices are based on a one night stay at an Airbnb and the average price for a hotel room according to Hotel.com’s Hotel Price Index Report.

This is information does not necessarily take into account for off-season pricing and special deals. It is just an average.

Where is Airbnb Cheaper than Hotels in the US?

In general, Airbnb is cheaper in the northern US. This applies to cities like:

  • Boston
  • Chicago
  • New York
  • Portland, OR
  • Seattle
  • Toronto
  • Washington, DC

Hotels typically offer better rates in the southern part of the US. This is true in cities such as:

  • Austin, TX
  • Nashville, TN
  • New Orleans
  • San Francisco

How about Airbnb prices in the rest of the world?

Popular tourist destinations around the word that have more affordable Airbnb options include:

  • Amsterdam
  • Berlin
  • London
  • Madrid
  • Paris
  • Sydney, Australia
  • Venice
  • Vienna

Did you know that the majority of Airbnb properties are in Europe? This explains the competitive pricing–there is a lot to choose from.

How to get even lower rates

Airbnb accommodations vary in type. You are going to pay more for a private room or dwelling. You can rent an entire apartment, beach house, condo, etc. To save money you can also book a room in a house with a shared bathroom or other cost saving situations like a shared kitchen, shared room, etc.

The best bargains on shared rooms are in Berlin, Sydney, and Vienna.

"We were in a third-world country. You do not want to have that kind of surgery in those conditions, especially when you don´t speak the language. If I didn´t have it, I would still be in Brazil recovering." Read More
